(1) History: School of Perfume and Aroma Technology, the former Department of Biology and Food Technology of Shanghai Institute of Technology, was founded in January 2001. It was established by merging Department of Food and Chemical Engineering of Shanghai Light Industry College and Department of Chemical Engineering of Shanghai Chemical Engineering College. After Shanghai Research Institute of Fragrance & Flavor Industry became one part of Shanghai Institute of Technology, School of Perfume and Aroma Technology was re-organized in 2006.
(2) Current Situation: School of Perfume and Aroma Technology is the earliest established education pilot with the target of system training the technical talents of flavor and fragrance in domestic. It consists of four departments, namely, perfume and aroma technology and engineering, cosmetic technology and engineering, food science and technology, and biological engineering. Under its administration there are 7 majors. Among them, “light chemical engineering” was included in the “National Ministry of Education Excellent Engineer Plan”.
“Perfume and aroma technology and engineering” and “cosmetic technology and engineering” were included in the “outside-the-directory Application-oriented Undergraduate”. “Perfume and aroma technology and engineering” and “food science and technology” were included in “The pilot program of Applied Undergraduate in Shanghai University”. “Food science and technology” were included in “Shanghai secondary vocational education-applied undergraduate disciplines consistent training mode pilot”. At present, there are 78 teachers, 13 of them are professors, 22 of them are associate professors, 43 of them have doctor degree. Some of them have won the glory titles, such as “New Century Talents Project” ,“Shanghai Leading Talent”, "The recruitment program of global experts", “Shu guang scholar”, “Pu jiang Talents Plan”, “Chen guang scholar”, “Shanghai Science and Technology Development Funds” “National Prominent Teacher”, “Shanghai Model Teacher”, “Shanghai 51 Labor Medal” “Shanghai Woman Pace-setter”,“China’s Youth Award” et al. There are approximately 1066 full-time students which includes 915 undergraduate students and 151 graduate students.
The school has received many prizes in scientific research awards: second prize of National science and technology progress awards (I item), first, second and third prize of Shanghai science and technology progress awards（many items）, National and province Award for Technological Invention (many items). The school also has won many education prizes: high-quality courses which were approved by the national and Shanghai (3 items), Shanghai special prize for teaching achievements (I item), first, second and third prize for teaching achievements in Shanghai (many items），Shanghai excellent teaching material award (I item). The school has presided over and completed several projects research funds including: National key research and development plan, 973 program, Support plan of the Ministry of science and technology, National Natural Science Foundation (8 items), research and development programs from local governments and enterprises (more than 30 items). The total of research funds is nearly 100 million yuan. Nearly 185 national invention patents have been applied or authorized and more than 470 academic papers have been published. Nearly 50 scientific and technological achievements were promoted for industrial applications in domestic and foreign enterprises, and the direct economic benefit is nearly 10 billion yuan. In this process, 8 high and new technology enterprises were cultivated and incubated, 3 state-owned enterprises were promoted to go public.
Domestic and International exchange/cooperation is one of important activities in the school. Up to now, the school has established excellent co-operative relations and united laboratories with many famous university, enterprises and research institutions in France, the United states, England, Germany, Japanese, Israel and new zealand including International Superior Institute of Perfume Cosmetics Aromas (ISIPCA), Rutgers University in the united states and German WILD food ingredients Co., Ltd. Besides, the school has set up a wide cooperation with China national light industry council, China association of fragrance flavor and cosmetic industry and famous enterprises in domestic such as Henan Shuanghui Group, Yunnan Hongta Group, Shanghai Huabao spice Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Burton spice Co., Ltd., Shanghai Bai run essence Co., Ltd., Shanghai Bright Dairy Co., Ltd. and Shijiazhuang Lida Chemicals Co., Ltd.
In recent years, graduates from SPT are generally received agreement of the society and the enterprises. And the annual employment rate is nearly 100%.
